Reviving the Notetaker's Smalltalk-78 System Speaker: Dan Ingalls Mon, August 18, 12:00pm – 12:30pm Abstract: Smalltalk-78 was an interesting Sweet Spot on the way towards Smalltalk-80. It had the Smalltalk-76 bytecode kernel, and used BitBlt as its graphics kernel exclusively for the first time. Without blocks and meta classes it is an interesting contrast to current Smalltalks. We build a VM to run the Notetaker version in a web browser. It runs faster than the original, and with our extensions (including an http-based update stream) became a quite usable and enjoyable system. Bio: Dan was the original designer of the Smalltalk--78 and -80 virtual machine and kernel class library. He is now a principal investigator in the Communications Design Group at SAP Labs. The Smalltalk-78 revival is a collaboration with Bert Freudenberg, Ted Kaehler, Yoshiki Ohshima, and Alan Kay.
