Title: AppeX Speaker: Jerry Kott Slides: http://www.slideshare.net/esug/2014-0817esug2014appe-x Mon, August 18, 11:30am – 12:00pm Abstract: Jerry Kott of Cincom Systems will demonstrate building a web application that can be accessed live by the workshop participants. The application will be created using AppeX, Cincom’s new web development framework. Workshop participants will learn how to remotely manage a SiouX HTTP server, and how to build a ‘starter’ HTML page. Using several different web application scenarios, Jerry will show the participants how to integrate a 3rd party Javascript library in an AppeX web application, how to activate web session management, and how Server-Sent Events (SSE) are used in AppeX to provide server to client event notification. As a final step, the web application will be augmented to support off-line access from mobile devices. The workshop will include a live demo showing key features of AppeX with live examples. Bio: Jerry Kott has been a senior software engineer with Cincom Systems since 2008 and is currently working on the Cincom® VisualWorks® HTTP server named “SiouX” as well as “AppeX”—a new Web application development framework built on top of the SiouX server. Both are components of the Cincom Smalltalk™ Foundation. Prior to joining Cincom, Jerry worked as a Smalltalk consultant in a variety of industries including finance, insurance, telecommunications, manufacturing and entertainment. Throughout his career, Jerry has used most of the Smalltalk dialects. He first met Smalltalk/V in his native Czechoslovakia in 1988 while writing his masters theses at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University of Prague. The political upheaval of 1988/1989 led Jerry to leave Czechoslovakia, and after a year in Austria, his family settled in Canada. While working as a programmer analyst at the Toronto Dominion Bank, he was reintroduced to Smalltalk in 1993—this time with the intent of staying with it for good. Jerry’s recollection of his falling in love with Smalltalk can be summed up like this: Day one: This is weird, no source code file? Day two: This is interesting; I can inspect live objects and send messages to them! Day three: This is great! I never want to use any other language! When not programming in Smalltalk, Jerry is involved in making independent films as a Cinematographer. He also occasionally dabbles as an associate producer and assistant director. He received a cinematography award for the lighting and lensing of Jackhammer—a slapstick comedy from the world of male adult entertainment (it’s not what most people think). The film was produced locally in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and featured a host of international talent including Jamie Kennedy, Rob Wells and Pamela Anderson. The film was recently screened at the Cinerockom International Film Festival in Cannes, France. Jerry is an active member of Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue, which is a volunteer emergency response team that services the rugged western coastline of Vancouver Island. He lives in Victoria, British Columbia with his wife, five chickens and approximately 120,000 bees.
